Craps has a unique story. The dice game in its original form was the English game of Hazard, which is referred to in Chaucer’s The Canterbury Tales, among other historic works. In Hazard, players specify their ‘main’ - a number between five and nine - before rolling two dice and attempting to reach it. Each roll determines whether the player ‘throws in’ and wins, or ‘throws out’ and loses. If the roll neither wins nor loses, the player rolls again.
The rules of Hazard are complicated, and the game fell out of popularity by the 19th century. However, a version of the game was developed which simplified the rules, and this game became known as craps. In North America, craps is now one of the most popular casino games thanks to the lively atmosphere at the table and the highly interactive, fast gameplay.
